Barra, North & South Uist & Benbecula

There are now 15 more Dementia Friends across the South Isles! We had a very successful uptake from the drop in sessions too. Thanks everyone!

I experienced ‘drone envy’ visiting Andy Mackinnon at Taigh Chearsabhagh! What a wonderful way to film!

Spent the day on Barra today, Information session at Castlebay Hall jointly working with Alzheimer Scotland and then a session of cyanotype printing at Cobhair Bharraigh from the Eilean/Island Mhairi and Pat Law exhibition at An Lanntair last year.

Twilling Tweeds workshops

Maggie and I are looking forward to attending the Twilling Tweeds workshops to learn skills that we can hopefully share across project participants. We are also funding places through the project for practitioners working with people living with dementia, so that they can share their newly-acquired skill with the people they work with across the islands.

Absent Friends Festival Workshop with Dawn Susan

Dawn Susan ran a very absorbing workshop at Shawbost Old School today, demonstrating how to weave a willow decoration for an absent friend, which is very befitting of Remembrance Day tomorrow. We chatted about absent friends and one lady I took along met up with many past friends and neighbours, which made the session even more worthwhile for her. Her fingers worked neatly, creating very intricate and neat patterns into her fish. The entire group was immensely welcoming and very glad to see people living with dementia out of their care settings and participating in community workshops based on a common heritage and cultural interest, rather than the event being about dementia. We were even invited to Bragar Old School for coffee another day. One gentleman I took along was able to exercise both hands, without giving it as much thought as a physio session and this was very successful.

Cabraich was the organisation holding the event, hosted by Maggie Smith. And now I’m going to embarrass her by saying how very honoured I am to be working with her on this team as well. Please also check out Woven Communities, a fantastic project which Dawn Susan has worked so very hard on and has great resources and a very informative website.

And this afternoon, we took the workshop to Harris House

The afternoon session was not quite so lucky with the sunshine but everyone engaged and had fun choosing what to print. We printed a necklace, seaweed from the harbour, flowers from the car park, glass pieces, feathers and some twigs. We managed to print two outside but the rest were finished in the light box.

Cyanotype Image workshop with Mhairi Law this morning at Solas

We were so fortunate with the sunshine this morning, for the cyanotype image print workshop at Solas Day Centre in Stornoway.

Mhairi Law showed everyone examples of her work and encouraged participants to choose items to print. We created some indoors in the light box and some outside in the sunshine. The results were fantastic and I’m sure we will see some of them on the wall soon!.
